Dr Betty Waized (PhD Agribusiness) is a lecturer, researcher, and consultant in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Tanzania. She holds a PhD in Agricultural Sciences (Agribusiness) from the University of Wales Bangor, a master’s degree from the University of Dar es Salaam, and a bachelor’s degree from SUA. She also holds a postgraduate certificate in international trade from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB).
She is determined and enthusiastic about academia, research, and development. Betty serves as the MBA-Agribusiness Programmes Coordinator and the overall Postgraduate Studies Coordinator at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness. She is a member of the Technical Committee of Sokoine University Graduate Entrepreneurs Cooperative (SUGECO), serves as a member of the board of Agricultural Sector Policy and Institutional Reforms Strengthening (ASPIRES), and was a member of the Ministerial Advisory Board of the Tanzania Tree Seed Agency (TTSA).
Betty has extensive knowledge in agriculture economics and agribusiness, with 15 years’ experience in the field. She has published in the fields of enterprise development, youth and agribusiness, value chains, food trade, food systems, nutrition and agriculture, farming systems, and consumer influence on food distribution. She is currently involved in collaborative research on food systems – Agricultural Sector Policy and Institutional Reforms Strengthening (ASPIRES) – between SUA and Michigan State University (MSU), which is looking at the dynamics of the penetration of processed foods in rural and urban Tanzania. Betty is also participating in the Building Stronger Universities Phase III (BSU III), where she has worked on consumer preferences and choices for processed foods, including fortified foods, and is currently working on poultry and sunflower value chain development. Betty has supervised over 17 graduate students over the years. Coaching and mentoring are among her professional strengths.
