Dr Thobela Nkukwana is a Senior Lecturer in Poultry Science in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP) and serves in the Transformation Desk. She obtained a BSc Degree at the University of the North and an MSc Degree in Poultry Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. During her tenure as lecturer at the University of Fort Hare, she embarked on her doctoral studies as part of the NRF capacity building initiative under the PhD track.
Dr Nkukwana serves as a sub-editor for the South African Journal of Animal Sciences, Editorial Board member and sub-editor of Welwitschia International Journal of Agricultural Sciences, and a reviewer for several high-impact journals. Her research focus areas include: use of natural and biotech feed additives as alternatives to in-feed antibiotics in production of poultry meat and eggs; digestive physiology and gut health; use of agro-processing by-products for partial replacement of conventional feed ingredients; climate-change effects on the conservation and use of indigenous (heritage) poultry for sustainable food production and security in rural communities; and welfare in poultry production system.
