Prof. Marshall Keyster

Marshall Keyster is an Associate Professor in Biotechnology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and is also the Chairperson of the UWC Department of Biotechnology. He received his PhD in Plant Biotechnology from the Institute for Plant Biotechnology (IPB) at Stellenbosch University (SU). Marshall underwent postdoctoral training in the field of plant molecular biology at UWC in the Department of Biotechnology, where he was supported by a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa.

Marshall is a co-principle investigator (co-PI) on plant science research in the Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) and received University of Missouri South African Education Program (UMSAEP) funding to do research in the Christopher S. Bond Life Sciences Centre in the fall of 2016 with the Interdisciplinary Plant Group (IPG) at the University of Missouri (MU). He is an NRF-rated researcher, and his research aim is to improve crop plant tolerance to high (toxic) metals and low (deficient) metals (nutrients) using three approaches: 1) molecular technologies, 2) chemical signalling molecules, and 3) use of bacteria and fungi as biofertilizers. He is a very active Google guide in his spare time.
