Policy brief #101: Unlocking the potential of indigenous crops in Tanzania

In sub-Saharan Africa, and particularly Tanzania, indigenous crops hold immense potential despite being overlooked in efforts to combat food insecurity. These crops offer a chance to diversify farming systems, improve food security, achieve dietary variety, meet nutritional needs, and alleviate poverty while boosting income and health. To revitalize Tanzania’s agricultural heritage and enhance food security, a multi-pronged approach is needed. Firstly, government policies should actively promote indigenous crops. This can be achieved through research funding and support programs that help farmers adopt and improve cultivation methods. Additionally, public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives led by policymakers can cultivate local appreciation for these crops, boosting domestic demand and consumption. Finally, well-designed marketing strategies are crucial to establishing strong value chains, both within Tanzania and internationally, ensuring the long-term success of indigenous crops.
