Policy brief #108: Towards healthy diets and safe foods: What should be done to achieve this goal by 2030?

Empowering consumers to make informed choices about food safety and nutrition is crucial for addressing the rising prevalence of diet-related non-communicable diseases (DRNDCs) in Tanzania. Despite national and global efforts to improve food systems and promote healthy diets, the number of people affected by DRNDCs continues to increase. This is largely due to the widespread availability of contaminated and unhealthy foods, such as those with pesticide residues, aflatoxins, and excessive amounts of fats, sugars, and salts. To combat this issue, it is essential to educate consumers about food safety risks, the nutritional value of different foods, and the link between dietary choices and health outcomes. By empowering consumers to make informed decisions, we can contribute to a healthier population and reduce the burden of DRNDCs in Tanzania.
