Policy brief #109: Establishing agricultural mechanisation extension agents to promote gender-transformative smallholder rice mechanisation

Promoting the ownership and use of machinery by smallholder farmers is a crucial step towards achieving efficient, effective, and sustainable rice production. By introducing agricultural mechanisation extension agents or training existing extension agents, smallholder farmers can be empowered to adopt and use machinery effectively. This approach can also encourage women’s participation in agriculture by providing them with access to appropriate machinery and training. The proposed initiatives can be replicated in other sub-Saharan African countries, contributing to sustainable mechanisation in smallholder agriculture. Addressing the challenges faced by smallholder farmers, such as limited access to capital and gender disparities, is essential for promoting the widespread adoption of mechanisation. By providing targeted support and training, we can empower farmers to improve their livelihoods and contribute to sustainable food production.
